Description

When you hear “Chiang Mai Mango,” you’re entering a bit of a “branding” overlap in the mango world. In many nurseries—especially in India and Bangladesh—the terms Chiang Mai and Red Ivory are used interchangeably for the same fruit.

However, technically, “Chiang Mai” can refer to a couple of different things depending on who you are talking to.

1. The Red Ivory Connection (The most common usage)

In the current commercial nursery market, “Chiang Mai Mango” is the regional name given to the Red Ivory. Since the Red Ivory was famously developed/refined in the Chiang Mai province of Thailand, many sellers simply call it the “Chiang Mai Variety.”

  • Appearance: Same jumbo, tusk-shaped fruit with a red blush.

  • Weight: Can hit that massive 1kg to 2kg mark.

  • Status: This is the one people are usually looking for when they want the “giant red mango.”

2. The Mahachanok Connection (The “Rainbow” Mango)

There is another famous variety developed in Chiang Mai called the Mahachanok. While some people call this the Chiang Mai mango, it is visually different:

  • Shape: Also elongated, but narrower and more curved (like a banana).

  • Color: Famous for its “rainbow” skin—it transitions from green to yellow to a vibrant pinkish-purple.

  • Flavor: Much more intense, “perfumed” aroma compared to the Red Ivory.

Comparison: Red Ivory vs. Mahachanok

Feature Red Ivory (often called Chiang Mai) Mahachanok (the other Chiang Mai hero)
Size Jumbo (up to 2kg) Medium (250g–400g)
Color Red blush over green/yellow Multicolored (Yellow/Pink/Purple)
Shape Thick “Elephant Tusk” Slender “Banana” shape
Texture Very firm, meaty, fiberless Buttery, juicy, fiberless
